It's a certainty that none of the fellows who served as Army Divers in Vietnam could have imagined that one day the pictures they were taking and the narratives they would come to tell would wind up on something called the Internet. Digital cameras, scanners, home computers, the Internet, email and all the rest that would make this possible were yet to be.
Army Diver photo albums, filled with images from Vietnam, would lay more or less dormant until a few guys who were Army Divers between 1969 and 1971 "bumped" back into each other on the Internet. A decision was made to make a go of sharing their experiences from the past with pictures and narratives under the banner of the Vietnam Veterans Army Divers Association. It's a very small group to be sure, and I doubt it will ever grow very much. In the grand scheme of things I suppose that such things don't really mean very much to many but since I posted a website about my recollections and such, from Army Diving days in Vietnam, I have been in contact with some old dive buddies, and others from the past. It seems there is more to be remembered and so the Vietnam Veterans Army Divers Association was created. The mission, for what it is worth, is simple; gather pictures and narratives from Army diving days in Vietnam and share them with others.
San Diego Naval Station U.S. Naval School Diver Second Class
Below are graduation pictures of the three US Naval School Diver Second Classes that ran consecutively. The Navy was responsible for the initial training of many Army Divers, along with various Naval personnel, including UDT personnel, and even a few "spooks" who (for obvious reasons) are not in the pictures. We trained in SCUBA, Shallow Water gear, and Deep Sea Diving gear. It was fun ... more or less.
